German Cockroaches are fast becoming the most common pest we encounter in the Newcastle region. The last two months we have seen a definite increase on during the same time last year. Control of this pest is best left to the professional pest controller. The reason being is that this pest has a rapid breeding cycle and is very good at exploiting cracks and crevices that can be hard to find. You need to understand their habits very well to manage them effectively.
Where do cockroaches hide?
Once the infestation becomes quite large these pests start to run out of their preferred hiding places (Cracks and crevices) and they can become easier to find and seen on a more regular basis. They will start to be seen in the day time and in areas where there’s not too much food and water like bedrooms. If you’re seeing these pests in areas of your home other than the kitchen, laundry or bathrooms than you probably have a decent infestation in your place.
Not everyone realises that when there is an infestation of this pest in your home, these cockroaches will exploit many unsuspecting areas as resting or harbourage areas. A perfect home for them within your home are electrical appliances. These items are dark, warm and safe for them to hide in and in the case of toasters, kettles, microwaves and similar items they are also provided with food and/or water.
They can often damage expensive items such as televisions, dishwashers and fridges. Recently we were at a customer’s house whose television was infested with German Cockroaches. You can see from these photos the mess and potential for damage. They can damage the electrical components within.
How to control German Cockroaches
The first step is an inspection starting in the kitchen and then in a methodical manner working around the home. It is important with this pest to understand the extent of the infestation and known and potential hiding areas of these pests.
Once the inspection is complete we need to treat all of the cracks and crevices in which they are hiding. These can be found all around the house for example under sinks and in cupboards and many other places. It is important that no hiding place is missed. This will only mean control is not effective or will take much longer.
We also need to inspect electrical items. Items like fridges, toasters, kettles and clocks are ideal for this place. We have products available to us that allow us to very effectively treat inside electrical items without opening them up.
Confined voids also require protection. We carry out treatments to such areas with specialised equipment moving around the home ensuring that every possible area these pests are living or can live are treated and protected.
