In the Newcastle and Hunter regions, the weather conditions have recently brought a large amount of rain to the area. As a result of all the rain, there is still quite a lot of water laying around. Because of this, we have seen a large increase in the number of mosquitoes across our region, especially in the New Lambton area, close to the Blackbutt Reserve.
Mosquitoes will breed in any containers that hold water. Items lying around in your yard that can hold enough water for breeding might include old tyres, buckets, toys, pot plant bases, roof gutters and water tanks.
To help keep your yard free of breeding sites, store containers under cover or throw them away, and regularly tip out any water that does get caught anywhere.
In the warmer summer months, mosquitoes can grow from egg to adult in a week.
There are 30 different types of mosquito in Newcastle and Hunter, including the saltmarsh mosquito, the Hexham grey and the common banded freshwater mosquito. The risk of disease, which can be transmitted by these mozzies, including the dangerous Ross River Fever, is also increased, and is truly a serious concern.
